Surviving Christmas With Under-5s: Tips from Happyjacks Soft Play

🎄 Surviving (and Enjoying!) Christmas with Under-5s — The Happyjacks Way

Ah, Christmas with little ones — that magical mix of sparkle, sugar, and just a dash of chaos!
Here at Happyjacks Soft Play, we know that the festive season can bring as many meltdowns as moments of magic (and not just from the kids!). So we’ve put together our favourite tried-and-tested tips to help parents of under-5s keep Christmas joyful, calm, and full of fun.

🎁 1. Keep It Simple, Keep It Sweet

We all dream of a picture-perfect Christmas — but little ones don’t care if the garland’s crooked or the wrapping paper doesn’t match.
What they really want? You.
Stick roughly to your usual routines (especially naps and meals), and don’t pack the calendar too full. The best memories often come from quiet, snuggly moments at home.

🧸 2. Manage the Merry Mayhem

Christmas is a full-on sensory experience — lights, visitors, jingles, and sweets galore!
To keep things calm:

  • Create a cosy “quiet zone” with soft toys, books, or a blanket.

  • Step outside for some fresh air when things get too noisy.

  • Watch for signs of overload — sometimes the best gift is a bit of peace and quiet.

🍪 3. Let Them Get Involved (Even if It Gets Messy!)

There’s nothing toddlers love more than “helping” — and Christmas prep is the perfect time to let them join in.
Hand them a wooden spoon to stir the cookie dough, let them hang a few baubles (probably all on the same branch), or give them stickers for gift tags.
Sure, it won’t be Pinterest-perfect… but the giggles will be priceless.

🕯️ 4. Start Simple Traditions

Traditions don’t have to be grand — they just have to be yours.
Try a Christmas Eve story by fairy lights, matching pyjamas for the family, or making paper snowflakes together. These little rituals become the ones your children will look forward to year after year.

🎄 5. Tame the Toy Tornado

Let’s be honest — the mountain of presents can be a bit much.
To avoid overwhelm, try the “want, need, wear, read” gift rule:

🎁 Something they want,
🧦 Something they need,
👕 Something to wear,
📚 Something to read.

And when it’s time to open gifts, go slow. Spreading it out through the day helps kids enjoy each one instead of rushing through.

👨‍👩‍👧 6. Family Time — Without the Fuss

Visiting relatives can be lovely… and exhausting.
Let family know your child’s nap times or comfort items, and don’t be afraid to take a “recharge break.” Most grandparents are happy to help — let them take over storytime or cuddles while you grab a moment to yourself (or sneak a mince pie in peace).

💤 7. Protect That Precious Sleep

A well-rested child is a happier one (and so are the parents!).
Stick to familiar bedtime routines, even when you’re away. A favourite toy, story, or lullaby can make new surroundings feel safe and familiar.

📷 8. Be in the Picture

We all love those adorable Christmas photos — but try to capture the feeling more than the perfect shot.
Take a few quick snaps, then put the phone down and jump in the fun. One day, your child will love seeing you in those memories, too.

❤️ 9. Don’t Forget You!

Amidst all the glitter and giggles, don’t forget to look after yourself.
Take five minutes for a breather, ask for help when you need it, and remember — the best Christmases aren’t about perfection. They’re about laughter, love, and a little bit of soft play energy when everyone’s had too many mince pies!
